This book is about the Officers and Men of the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards who fought in the China War of 1860 also known as the Second Opium War. Some of these soldiers were also engaged previously in the Crimean War 1854-56. In 1860 the Kings Dragoon Guards were stationed at Bangalore in the Madras Presidency.

On the 1st of March the strength of the regiment was increased by 58 men from the 12th Lancers, and soldiers from other cavalry regiments, and on that day, orders were received for a wing of the regiment to proceed on service to China.

On the 2nd of March 14 Officers, 312 Other Ranks and 313 Troop horses marched to Madras for embarkation.

The first two Troops of the KDG arrived in Hong Kong on the 15th of May the last two Troops did not reach there until the 19th and 29th of June and other regimental details were not until the middle of July. The British force was assembling at Talienwan Bay on the Manchurian Peninsula. The cavalry made their camp at Odin Bay. The Kings Dragoon Guards made a famous charge on the 21st of September at Chang-Kia-Wan accompanied by Fanes Horse and Probyn’s Horse which completely routed the Tarter Cavalry.
